WINCHESTER SPEEDWAY

Firecracker 4 Crown Late Model Series Unveiled !

COLUMBUS , MS- The inaugural Brown Engineering Firecracker 4 Crown Late Model Series will come to fruition over the 4th of July holiday weekend. A four race swing through the Deep South will see Super Late Model competitors compete four nights in a row with $2,000 to win and $200 to start 40-lap main events taking place each evening. The weekend will offer over $8,000 possible to win plus a points fund for the top five drivers after all four races are complete. Robert Brown of Brown Engineering in Aberdeen , Mississippi has come on as a title sponsor for the highly anticipated campaign.

The events were established through planning and the cooperation of area promoters as the four race swing will begin on Friday night July 2nd at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Alabama then move down to Johnny Stokes’ Columbus Speedway on Saturday night July 3rd. Action will shift north up to Pine Ridge Speedway in Baldwyn, Mississippi which is just about 15 minutes north of Tupelo for traditional Sunday evening action on July 4th. The Firecracker 4 Crown Series will head east and culminate at the historic Winchester Speedway in Winchester , Tennessee for a Monday evening affair where the series champion will be determined.

Needless to say the intersectional series should draw the top talented regional drivers from Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi into competition throughout the weekend hopefully providing for a unique mix of race teams for the fans and also provide the drivers with an opportunity to test their skills at a variety of race tracks with the challenge of taming differing racing surfaces and talented competition. The tracks on the series are all relatively small in nature but nonetheless some of the best in the south. Promoter Jeff Greer continues to lead the resurgence of the North Alabama Speedway which is undeniably one of the best kept secrets in the country as “The Action Track” lives up to its moniker and has become synonymous for providing great racing. Fans and drivers know to expect a thrill ride of a show at Johnny Stokes’ Columbus Speedway as the high banked 3/10-mile oval is a fan favorite for providing “get down” action at “The Baddest Bullring in the South.” Pine Ridge Speedway in Baldwyn , Mississippi has made great strides under promoter Michael Mauldin as “The Ridge” is known for providing a family atmosphere and fun for its holiday weekend events. The finale’ at Winchester Speedway which is under the direction of Tim Smith and Dennis Bowling should be a good one as Middle Tennessee fans and teams traditionally flock to the popular mid-town oval in droves to cap off a great holiday weekend of racing. For more event information, fans and teams should contact their local track manager or website for upcoming details.

RC Roper Gallops to USA Sprints Victory at Hendry County Speedway!

The USA Sprints Posse made thier return to Hendry County Speedway with great anticipation because there had been 4 different Winners in 5 events in 2004.It was anyones guess as to would come out on top this very chilly Winter night in Clewiston Florida. The drivers arrived to find a Track that would be a challenge not only because it was only the second visit there but also because it was hard and slick but fairly smooth. The crew Chiefs were hard at work as soon as the cars entered the pits examining the surface and contemplating the set-ups that would be used. This would play a very important factor and the key to Victory.

Heat Race # 1 action began with Mike Davis Jr.# 3 "The Kid" and David "Skeeter" Kelly #12 lining up on the front row in front of Scott "Rock & Roll Rocchio #16 and "Tiny" Tim George # 1.Skeeter shot out in front at the drop of the green followed by George and Scott Rocchio.Andy Kelly was starting back in the pack and would have to hustle to secure a good starting spot in the Main.Tim tried Skeeter a few times but could not get the forward bite off the corners to make the pass.Andy Kelly did indeed hustle his car and made it to 3rd but ran out of time.David Kelly #12 drove a nice race and was followed by Tim George # 1,Andy Kelly # 11,Ron Armstrong # 56,Scott Rocchio # 16 and Mike Davis Jr.# 3.

Heat Race # 2 saw RC Roper "The Racin Cowboy" # 92 and John "Party Time" Cinkota # 45 make up the front row with Bob "The Arrow" Parrow # 24 and Sean "Zippy" Namor # 10n.As the cars made thier way around turn # 3 Flagman Don Vanacker waved the green flag and Roper blaster out of turn 4 to take John Cinkota down into turn 1.Roper's car was really hooked up and began to distance himself from the pack.Bob "Thunderfoot" Schaeffer who started dead last was really zinging that Budweiser car on the high side and thrilling the fans as he always does.Namor and Schaeffer had a good battle with Schaeffer making the pass stick on lap 5.Cinkota was running a very solid 2nd but had Schaeffer determined to take it.They battled for 3 laps but to no avail John kept his spot.Roper cruised home for the Win in front of John Cinkota #45,Bob Schaeffer #22,Sean Namor 10n, and Bob Parrow #24

The Main Event would see RC Roper # 92 draw the pole alongside David Kelly #12 with John Cinkota #45 and Tim George # 1 directly behind on the 2nd row.As the cars rocketed out of turn 4 Roper brought the field to the green and down into turn 1 with David Kelly right on his hip pocket.Skeeter tried in vain to get to the bottom but John Cinkota had other ideas..Cinkota took advantage of his position and made his way into 2nd passing Kelly.Meanwhile Andy "Hammer Down" Kelly # 11 was in a heated battle trying to move forward. The Track had become very slick so finesse would play an important role the Drivers would need on the Tricky 1/4 mile Hendry County Surface.Bob Schaeffer,Tim George along with Andy Kelly were engaged in an all out war as they continually battled back and forth relentlessly. for postions 4rd, 5th and 6th.

Back up front The "Cowboy" stretched his lead to 12 car lengths before the caution flew on lap12 for the # 24 of Bob Parrow who spun in turn 4.When the race was restarted Roper again asserted himself and moved away from the pack.John Cinkota was running a very solid 2nd with Andy Kelly,Bob Schaeffer Tim George and David Kelly all in a pack and battling for positions back and forth.Andy Kelly finally in his never say die attitude got by Cinkota with 2 laps to go.Roper would cruise home for the Win lapping all but the top 5 cars and make the 5th different Winner in 6 races so far in the 2004 Southern Thunder Tour.Scott Steffe would Win the Colley Racing Equipment "Mechanic of the Race" award to the Winning Crew Chief.Andy Kelly came home 2nd and also Won the KSE Racing products "Hard Charger" award. He was followed by John Cinkota,Bob Schaeffer,Tim George and David Kelly in 3rd,4th,5th and 6th.Sean "Zippy" Namor drove a nice race to bring home 7th with Ron "Happy" Armstrong,Scott Rocchio and Bob Parrow rounding out the top 10.

The next race for the USA Sprints Southern Thunder Tour will be at Thundercross Motorsports Park in Okeechobee Florida Saturday night April 10th @ 7pm.Andy Kelly has the points lead with Tim George,John Cinkota,Bob Schaeffer and RC Roper rounding out the top 5.Call the Track @ 866-863-7121 for more information and visit the USA Sprints website @ www.usasprints.com for all the USA Sprints News and Information.

O'REILLY THUNDER RACING SERIES OPENER SET FOR THIS FRIDAY

MEMPHIS, TN (March 31, 2004) - The O'Reilly Thunder Racing Series will kick off its 2004 season with style this Friday night at Memphis Motorsports Park Dirt Track.

Sprint cars, super late models, open wheel modifieds , mini stocks, and street stocks will headline the program as the ¼ mile oval thunders into action.

Although excitement abounds for the opening event there will be a great deal of heavy hearts present at the track as fans and racers mourn the loss of sprint car racer, Sonny Sayre, who lost his life in an accident at Delta Bowl Speedway last Saturday night. As a salute to the memory of Sayre, several salutes are planned. Drivers will be presented with memorial stickers to run on their cars, and the sprint car feature will line up with the "missing man formation" to honor Sonny. The American flag will be flown at half staff, and drivers will pass their helmets through the stands to collect money to assist in the costs incurred in the accident. Once sufficient funds have been received to cover all medical expenses, the additional money will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Sayre's name. In addition, a guestbook will be set up on a table in the grandstand area, and fans will be able to come by and enter their information. This book will be presented to the Sayre family. Sonny had purchased a pit parking spot for the 2004 season. A wreath will be placed in this spot and will remain empty for the 2004 season. Last, but not least, the O'Reilly Thunder Racing Series has renamed their season ending Spirit Award to be the Sonny Sayre Spirit Award.

It is important to note that a slight change has been made to the late model tire rules to allow more people to compete. Visit the rules section at
www.thunderatthepark.com to view this modification.

Andy "Hammer Down" Kelly nails his 2nd USA Sprints Victory @ Orange County Raceway!

On a cool and chilly Winter evening The USA Sprints Posse rode into Bithlo Florida with only 1 thing on thier minds. That was to stake a claim on who was going to grab the Loot that Promoter Lou Banka had offered this nite. After heat race # 1 it was obvious that Colorodo's own Bob "Thundefoot" Schaeffer's #22 was making his bid for the Lions share as he drove a great race to best "Tiny" Tim George's #1 "Venice Wrecker" Shaw and Hometown Favorite John Cickota in the #45.

Heat Race # 2 saw RC Roper and Mike Love start from the front row with "Strange" Love grabbing the top spot for a lap until Andy Kelly drove high in turn 3 to use the cushion and take the lead over RC Roper who dove to the bottom to follow the # 11 Gambler Staggs Tree Service car. They finished that way with up and coming veteran Mike "The Professor" Steinruck coming home 3rd in the #44a,Ron Armstrong's Pennzoil Sponsored #56 was next followed by  Mike Love in the #7.

The main event was shaping up top be a "barn burner" but the drivers were thrown for a loop as the Track just didn't have the grip it had the last time out.It was not only going to be a contest of Driver Ability but a good car set-up was to be crucial as well.

RC Roper would bring the cars down for the green flag with "Thunderfoot" Bob Schaeffer flanked to his right and Tiny Tim George and Andy "HammerDown" Kelly directly behind in the second row.Roper's # 92 "Hayloft Western Wear" Special stumbled and did not accelerate off of turn 4 which allowed The #22 of Schaeffer to blow by on the outside going into turn 1.Andy Kelly also took the high line and followed the #22 as the cars exited turn 2 and down the back straight.Tim George took advantage of Ropers mechanical woes to make the pass off of turn 4.Schaeffer was well on his way to stretching his margin when John Cickota in the #45 spun after he made slight contact with a inside retaining Tire.Unfortunately he was out for the evening.

The green flew for the lap 3 restart and "Thunderfoot" rocketed off of turn 4 and led for the next 3 laps until he slid high and jumped the cushion in turns 1 & 2 allowing "Hammer Down" Kelly's # 11 to grab the lead. The race went the next 12 laps under green with Andy Kelly distancing himself from the pack."Tiny" Tim George would bring out the caution on lap 17 when he clipped one of those same inside Tractor Tires in turns 3 & 4.The race resumed with Kelly out front followed by Schaeffer and David "Skeeter" Kelly who borrowed Mike Davis's Car # 3.Skeeter and Schaeffer were waging a fierce battle unitl the caution flew again on lap 20 when newcomer Eddie "The Jewel" Newl's # 1e  and Tim George got tangled in turn 4.

On the lap 21 restart it was apparent that there was no one to challenge the "Hammer" as Andy was again pulling away from the field.Meanwhile Schaeffer and 'Skeeter" Kelly's war almost brought an end to thier night when the 2 collided off of turn 4 at which time Skeeter kept his foot in it to out dragrace Schaeffer down the front stretch into turn 1 with a slight advantage.Tim George came out of nowhere to pass RC Roper and Mike "The Professor" Steinruck who were battling with cars not performing up to thier usual standards but did a good job holding on to positions 5th and  6th.Andy Kelly cruised home for his 2nd USA Sprints Victory @ OCS and was chased home by his older brother David "Skeeter" Kelly and Bob Schaeffer.Tim George rallied big to storm back from a late race spin to take 4th and was followed by Steinruck,Roper,Armstrong and Mike Love and Eddie Jewel with his first top 10 finish.

Andy Kelly now takes his points lead at 361 into the next race @ Hendry County Speedway followed by Tim George's 345,Bob Schaeffer @321 and John Cickota @ 303.This will be the 2nd appearance of the young season @ HCS where Bob Schaeffer won the first Exhibition race there.Race time will be 7:00pm.Call John Burger for more information @(239) 839-8606 or Call the Track @ 863-805-8725 on Saturday.Visit the USA Sprints.com website for all the schedule, news and points updates @ www.usasprints.com.

Patrick Duggan takes Cleveland Speedway Opener

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (March 27) - Lenoir City, Tennessee driver Patrick Duggan opened the Cleveland Speedway season by leading every lap of the Late Model feature to take the win over a strong 23-car field Saturday night.

Duggan started on the pole for the 30-lap feature and out gunned outside front row starter Lamar Scoggins for the lead on the first lap and never looked back on his way to victory lane. If Duggan had looked back he would have seen Scoggins and Jonathan Davenport battling for the runner up spot with Johnny Chastain, Todd Morrow, Chris Beavers and Jeff Walker swapping positions behind them.

Morrow, who started fourth on the grid, would fall back as far as seventh before charging back to the front and a second place finish. Davenport form Blairsville, GA would come home third with Murphy NC's Johnny Chastain fourth and Lamar Scoggins fifth.

Rounding out the top ten were Chris Beavers, Jeff Walker, Bobby Mayse, John Owenby and Mike Tinker.

Nick Yancey threw down the gauntlet to his fellow Claimer Late Model competitors with strong flag-to-flag win in the time shortened (2 laps) event. Yancey was followed across the line by Glen Seaton II, Barney Stiles, Stephanie Powell and Chad Anderson.

Shawn Reese had a good night going until protest money was handed to Race Director T.A. Hicks after the checkered flag fell in the Hobby feature. Reese was disqualified after refusing to tear down. With the disqualification everyone moved up a spot with Jerry Coffman moving into the winners circle.

Doyle Herron, Chad Frizzell, Glen Seaton Jr. and Joey Wormsley rounded out the top five.

Willie Miller started third in the B-Hobby feature, shadowed leader Chad Holcomb for 14 laps and moved into the lead on the white flag lap for the win. Holcomb was second, Doyle Herron third, Judy Hysinger fourth and Robin Baker fifth.

Jimmy Brown outran Greg Henderson to take the Pony win. Following Brown and Henderson across the stripe were Jason Spraker, Danny Burnett and Donnie Lowe.

In the inaugural race for Two-Man Cruisers the Joe Parker led team took the win. Josh and Ronnie Brogdon were second, Will Julian and friend third, Daniel and Danny Burnett fourth and Dustin Tinsley and Jamie Thompson fifth. The sixth and final entry to cross the line was driven by Wanda and Glenda Beavers.

Volunteer Speedway to host World of Outlaws Late Model Series By Robert Walden

BULLS GAP, Tenn. – Volunteer Speedway will kick off its 2004 racing season in grand style with a big weekend of exciting action at the high-banked, 4/10-mile speedplant on Friday and Saturday, March 26-27. The Duayne Hommel Benefit is scheduled for Friday night, and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series makes its first-ever visit to the track on Saturday competing in a 60-lap feature paying $10,000-to-win.

The Duayne Hommel Benefit presented by Hoosier Tire South, on Friday (March 26), will feature a $3,000-to-win (35 laps) Super Late Model event. For drivers failing to make the 24-car starting field for the $3,000-to-win main, a $1,000-to-win (Non Qualifiers) race will be run. There will be a $50 entry fee for the Super Late Models.

Also scheduled are Limited Late Model, Hobby Stock, 4-Cylinder and Front Wheel Drive features. Friday grandstand admission is $15, with pit passes and backside tier-parking $25.

An exciting World of Outlaws Late Model show complete with qualifying, heat races, consolation(s) and fast-car dash highlight Saturday (March 27) night’s racing program. The WoO Late Model A-main will be 60 laps paying $10,000-to-win. Also in action will be the UMP (Open-Wheel) Modifieds. Saturday grandstand admission is $25, with pit passes and backside tier-parking $35.

The pit gate will open each day at 2 p.m., with the grandstands opening daily at 5 p.m.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series features the “Dirty Dozen” … arguably 12 of the top names in dirt racing: Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., Batesville, Ark.’s Billy Moyer, Rick Eckert of York, Pa., Ashland, Ky.’s Steve Francis, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga , Ga., Pewaukee, Wisc.’s Dan Schlieper, Bart Hartman of Zanesville, Ohio, Batesville, Ark.’s Wendell Wallace, Rick Aukland of Zanesville, Ohio, Parkersburg, W.Va.’s Mike Balzano, Chub Frank of Sugar Grove, Pa., and Union, Ky.’s Darrell Lanigan.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Volunteer Speedway to race this coming weekend because that’s always been one of my favorite tracks,” said the 37-year-old points leader McDowell. “Man, with those high banks you sure do get around there in a hurry. You’ve got to really be up on the wheel and hustle your car around there. I’ve always run very well at ‘The Gap’ and I believe the fans are going to see one great night of racing. I know there’s going to be a tremendous field of cars present, and hopefully we’ll be able to capture us our second victory of the year.

“With this new deal (World of Outlaws Late Model Series) we’re running this year, I’m really pumped up with excitement like you wouldn’t believe. I feel like the series has assembled the top dirt Late Model drivers in the country to showcase to the fans wherever we go to race. I know the promoters’ at tracks like to be able to guarantee their fans what drivers will be present to race, and with what we’re doing they can make that guarantee … because we all will be there.”

Besides the WoO regulars, expect a stellar field of heavy-hitters from the world of dirt Late Model racing to also be present. And of course, look for a strong contingent of East Tennessee locals to be on hand trying to defend their home turf from the “outlaws.” This event is shaping up to quite possibly be the biggest race ever held at Volunteer Speedway, making it a “must see.”

An evening of open practice is scheduled for Thursday, March 25 from 5-9 p.m. Pit admission is $20 for everyone who enters the pit sign-in gate, but there will be no charge to go in the grandstands.

Through the series’ first six events of 2004 – resulting in six different winners – the top 10 in World of Outlaws points entering the seventh event at Volunteer Speedway are: 1) Dale McDowell (519), 2) Scott Bloomquist (512), 2) Rick Eckert (512), 4) Billy Moyer (507), 5) Steve Francis (505), 6) Bart Hartman (489), 7) Dan Schlieper (486), 8) Clint Smith (479), 9) Mike Balzano (472), 10) Shannon Babb (433).
